Journey of Modeling
Through the lens of modeling
Being a model and fit model for VCU has also shown me what true product development looks like from the inside out. I’ve been able to witness the full journey of a garment from the first sketch to the muslin prototype to the final, runway-ready piece. Standing in the fitting room, watching designers pin, adjust, redesign, and problem-solve in real time, helped me understand how much intention and technique go into creating a piece that not only looks good but functions, fits, and communicates a message.
It’s one thing to see fashion from the outside, but being part of the development process gave me a front-row seat to the craftsmanship, the trial and error, and the creative decisions that shape a final product.
Storytelling Through Garments
What is the meaning?
Fashion is ultimately a form of storytelling. Every designer I’ve worked with brings their own narrative whether it’s cultural, emotional, or conceptual and as the model, I become the person who helps translate that story into movement and presence. Wearing their work helped me understand the meaning behind the designs, the themes they wanted to express, and the feelings they hoped to evoke. Modeling became more than just trying on garments; it became a way to help bring a story to life. Through this role, I learned that fashion isn’t just about clothes it’s about connection, communication, and the power of visual narratives.

Fittings to Runway
It starts with trying on early prototypes so designers can evaluate fit, proportion, and movement. From there, we work together pinning, adjusting, and refining each detail until the garment begins to match the designer’s original vision. As a fit model, I give feedback on comfort, mobility, and function, while the designer makes technical adjustments that bring the piece closer to its final form. After multiple rounds of fittings and revisions, the garment is finalized, styled, and prepared for the runway.

The portfolio of the designer
Models also play a major role in helping designers bring their portfolio lookbooks to life.As a model, I translate the designer’s concepts into poses, expressions, and energy that reflect the story they want to tell. This helps their garments come alive on the page and allows potential employers, critics, and collaborators to see the collection the way the designer envisioned it. By embodying the mood and intention of each piece, I help turn sketches and garments into a cohesive visual narrative that strengthens the designer’s portfolio and showcases the full artistry behind their work.

Photoshoots
Photoshoots are where the garment truly comes to life, and they’re one of the best examples of teamwork. As the model, I help show how the garment moves, feels, and exists on the body something a sketch or mannequin can’t capture. Every pose, adjustment, and shot is a collaboration, and together we create images that highlight the craftsmanship, personality, and intention behind the design. This is my favorite part of the process.
